What My God Saith, That Will I Speak

II Chronicles 18:13 - “And Micaiah said, As the LORD liveth, even what my God saith, that will I speak.”

As we look at this verse, it is essential to understand the context in which it lies. King Jehoshaphat is on the throne of the southern kingdom of Judah while the wicked King Ahab is on the throne in Israel. Jehoshaphat did what was right in the Lord’s eyes, but, like all men, he was imperfect. In his later years, Jehoshaphat allied with Ahab to go against Syria.

When we look at Jehoshaphat in this alliance in chapter 18, it reminds me of when a Christian chooses to put themself in a compromising situation. They know they are doing something that they shouldn’t, but, in their mind, they feel as though they are too far in the moment to turn back. As a side note, no matter where you are, you do not have to go further into sin. You can always turn back to the Lord. However, Jehoshaphat found himself in this situation and decided to proceed further into this alliance with Ahab.

In verse four, Jehoshaphat says to Ahab, “Enquire, I pray thee, at the word of the LORD to day.” When Ahab brought all of his false prophets they prophesied “great” things to Ahab. They said that he would be triumphant over Syria and that the time to pursue them is now.

However, Jehoshaphat was not easily persuaded. He asked Ahab in verse 6, “Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might enquire of him?” To which Ahab responded, “There is yet one man [Micaiah], by whom we may enquire of the LORD: but I hate him; for he never prophesied good unto me, but always evil.” Ahab hated Micaiah because he spoke the truth of God. Nevertheless, Ahab sent a messenger to Micaiah to see what he would say.

That brings us to our text. Ahab’s messenger said in verse 12, “Behold, the words of the prophets declare good to the king with one assent; let thy word therefore, I pray thee, be like one of theirs, and speak thou good.” Notice the prophet’s resolve in verse 13, “And Micaiah said, As the LORD liveth, even what my God saith, that will I speak.”

Here are three exhortations to us from Micaiah’s life:

1. As Christians, we must speak the TRUTH.
Micaiah was surrounded by false prophets who only spoke what the king wanted to hear. We must stand upon the truth of God’s Word and proclaim it boldly for all to hear.

2. As Christians, we must speak with COMPASSION.
There must be a balance of compassion and conviction in our message. It is not that we lack one or the other, but that we allow both to work in harmony.

3. As Christians, we must speak with URGENCY.
There is coming a day when you and I can no longer proclaim the good news. We will give an account to God for what we say or do not say to others. Are you speaking the truth of the Lord to others?
